White Mountains

The White Mountains are a beautiful mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine. They are part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and the most rugged mountains in New England. Most of the area is public land, including the White Mountain National Forest and a number of state parks.

We didn't make this video, but you will experience/visit almost everything in this video.

The Flume

We will visit the Flume or Flume Gorge, part of the Franconia Notch State Park, it is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart.

The entire loop takes approximately 1.5 hours and finishes at the Flume Building. The walk includes some uphill walking and a good amount of stairs. The boardwalk allows you to look closely at the growth of flowers, ferns and mosses found here.

The loop is about a 2.2 mile hike.

Mount Washington

We will explore the White Mountains most famous mountain, the 6,288-foot Mount Washington, which is the highest peak in the Northeastern U.S. and for 76 years held the record for fastest surface wind gust in the world (231 miles per hour in 1934).

We will drive up the mountain and explore its alpine peak above the tree line.

Polar Caves Park

Polar Caves Park is a set of glacially-formed caves located in the White Mountains region, The caves were formed from granite boulders and are so named because the deepest cave is cold enough to allow snow to linger long into the summer.

The caves are accessible through a network of wooden pathways.

You will also find a few animals.

And you will find an extensive gift shop

Echo Lake

Echo Lake is a 16-acre body of water which is part of Echo Lake State Park. It features a small swimming beach, where we will swim if the weather permits it, and you can also rent Canoes, Kayaks and Pedal Boats rentals for approx. $20/hour.

You will also have the option of a relatively short hike (0.5 mile roundtrip) to a very nice viewpoint above the lake.

Waterfalls and Cascades

We will visit/explore a series of other waterfalls and cascades, all of them less than 1 mile in hiking distance, some of of them no hiking at all. Here are photos of some of them:
